Back home safe and sound for all....
We are delighted to announce that all the children have safely returned to the orphanage after being closely monitored by Vietnamese authorities. They are currently in good health, having fully recovered, while the head of the establishment is slowly recuperating from their illness.
As the health situation in Vietnam remains precarious, the children will continue to be kept in isolation until further notice. We will continue to devote all of our energy to caring for them.

Back home safe and sound...
Almost 30 children have returned to the orphanage since the beginning of the week. We hope that the remaining children will also return soon.

Dear friends,
We regret to inform you that, at the request of the Vietnamese authorities, the children of Be Tho had to leave the orphanage due to several cases of infection. Those who tested positive (most of them) have been placed in isolation, while the healthy ones are being confined to a school until further notice. The evacuation of the premises went smoothly.
We will keep you informed of any updates.

Dear friends,
The COVID situation in HCM has worsened, with strict confinement measures in place for a few weeks already. No one is allowed to leave their home until further notice, except for essential services such as healthcare and food supplies. Local authorities are doing their utmost to help the population, especially with the distribution of basic necessities.
Despite some difficulties in terms of supply, the children of Be Tho have enough to eat and continue to receive food every week through our local partner. Due to the confinement, the planned move to the new orphanage in Bing Duong has been postponed and the work has been suspended. Only about twenty children were able to settle in a part of the new orphanage.
Schools remain closed and distance learning is not applicable to our orphans. In the meantime, those in charge of the orphanage are doing their best to provide some lessons to the children.
Dear friends in HCM and France, we would like to express our gratitude to those who responded to our call last July. Thanks to your generosity, we will soon be able to deliver a freezer, a large fridge, and some bicycles, which are necessary for the children's installation in the new orphanage.

Starting this summer, the Air Liquide Foundation will support PERLS in one of its three priority areas: health.
Every child needs a healthy and balanced diet to maintain good health. Therefore, the Air Liquide Foundation will contribute to financing the food aid provided to the children of the Be Tho orphanage for the next twelve months. They will now be able to benefit from a balanced meal every day, with a range of diverse and quality products. Fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, and dairy products will protect them from nutritional deficiencies and potential illnesses.
PERLS will continue to deliver the selected foods every week, enabling the distribution of 36,500 meals.
We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Air Liquide Foundation for their support!

Dear friends,
The new orphanage in Binh Duong is starting to take shape. While the construction of the first building has allowed for the transfer of some furniture from Be Tho, the second building is still under construction. The move is expected to take place at the end of July, two months later than planned.
Due to a lack of financial means, it is understood that the architect's plans will not be fully followed, including the interior walls and insulation of prefabricated modules. However, improvement works will be carried out in a second phase.
Despite this setback, the few photos we have received so far are promising and exciting! The new orphanage is surrounded by outdoor spaces, trees, and even butterflies. It is also surrounded by banana and rubber plantations, creating a beautiful and pleasant setting that will allow the children to have fun and exercise.

Dear friends, here is some news from BE THO:
After a period of calm, Vietnam has taken drastic measures and announced the partial containment of several cities in the country due to a surge in the virus caused by a hybrid variant.
The consequences of the situation for the orphanage:
-
The closure of schools, the re-confinement, and the difficulty for our team to go to Be Tho until further notice.
-
A drop in donations from locals (already reduced since the start of the health crisis).
-
The necessary postponement of the move when the work for the construction of the new orphanage had already been delayed. Be Tho should get permission to stay in Bien Hoa until August.
-
Delay for PERLS in its educational project.
Another commitment for PERLS is to participate modestly in the financing of some works of the new orphanage and thus allow the person in charge of the establishment to partially reimburse its creditors. Indeed, the conditions of the loans taken out to finance its construction are particularly precarious (short term, high-interest rates).
Some good news:
For the International Children's Day on May 31, our partner Central Group, who continues to deliver food to the orphanage every week, pleasantly surprised the children of Be Tho with a delivery of toys for each of them, books, and soap! Many thanks!!
The progressive deconfinement in France allows PERLS to redeploy all its energy to organize some events & manifestations over the next few months if the covid allows it!

Dear friends,
The plans for the new Be Tho orphanage have just been finalized and validated by the Vietnamese authorities. The construction of the establishment, largely made up of less expensive prefabricated modules, will be mainly financed by loans and donations. In return for the expropriation of the current orphanage, the State will provide the land of which it remains the owner. Work has already begun, and the move is planned for next summer, which is an absolute record!
Our recommendations for the layout of the new orphanage have been heard by the head of the orphanage. They include a separation of the sleeping areas for girls and boys, individual showers for each dormitory, spaces dedicated to games, reading, and relaxation for both young and old. The little ones will have their bedroom on the ground floor with direct access to the garden. The equipment that we had installed in the current orphanage, such as the playground and space for teenagers, will of course be transferred to the new establishment.
A future classroom reserved for our school project will also be set up, in addition to the study room.
The orphanage will consist of two two-storey buildings sharing a garden that will surely delight everyone! Children will now be able to enjoy the sunshine, run, play, and relax. Although they were somewhat destabilized and stressed when the move was announced last December, they are now looking forward to this new project with excitement and impatience.

BE THO children join PERLS to wish you a
HAPPY NEW YEAR 2021!
Against all odds, this year will be a year of great changes for our little proteges who will have to move in the coming months to Binh Duong, located several kilometers from Bien Hoa. Indeed, the construction of the new Long Thanh International Airport in 2021 requires the expropriation of the current establishment.
After a few weeks of worry, the orphanage is getting back on track to meet the needs of its children: land has been found in Binh Duong, plans for the new structure are already underway and its construction should not last more than a few months, with delivery scheduled for this summer. PERLS will do its best to support the orphanage and the children during this somewhat destabilizing transition period.
This new orphanage will be slightly larger than the previous one, with a more suitable layout for bedrooms and bathrooms. It will also benefit from a garden (finally), a vital space necessary for children, and will be located next to the other establishment in Be Tho that welcomes disabled children. Finally, the latter will not be transferred as we had wished to a structure more adapted to children with special needs, as administrative procedures are too complex and for emotional reasons.
For 2021, PERLS will have new priorities to provide psychological assistance to the children of Be Tho during this transition period, to allow children with disabilities 1/ to benefit from medical and psychological support, which is currently totally absent, and 2/ to support the orphanage in its new facilities. The help of our team on site is very valuable to us.
The other priorities of PERLS for 2021 remain unchanged. The association will continue to deploy all its energy to raise the necessary funds and carry out its projects:

Continue food aid, always with the objective of offering children a balanced diet of up to 7 meals per week (vs 3 usually and up to 5 since the health crisis), and this in a sustainable way.

Offer an education adapted to each of the children of the orphanage. The first step will be to assess each child's ability to attend regular schooling in order to act accordingly.
Finally, to start the year gently and joyfully, we are organizing a big outdoor outing for the children from the end of January so that the children can smile again after a complicated year in 2020.
